Dove on the Stone
A single dove settled on warm stone, the background loosened into ochre and shadow. The dove on stone is one of the oldest images the tradition hands a painter — the bird of the flood's end, resting because it found dry ground. Here it is also simply a bird in afternoon light, and the painting refuses to choose between the two readings.
